GSA - the Global mobile Suppliers Association – is celebrating the continuing success of GSM, and the growing momentum behind the evolution to 3G at this year’s CommunicAsia Show, on Stand 3J3-11 in Hall 3, taking place in Singapore from 18-21 June 2002. GSM is the world’s leading and fastest growing mobile standard, extending to 178 countries and serving over 700 million customers. With 90% of the world’s operators expected to deploy either WCDMA, EDGE, or a combination of both, as their platform of choice for 3G services, there is a clear roadmap to 3G already in place with the strongest industry backing. GSA’s activities at CommunicAsia highlight the key role the association and its members are playing in providing the technology and service backbone en route to 3G services, and promoting new mobile revenue streams and business opportunities.
This week, GSA is unveiling the latest in its acclaimed series of quarterly Mobile Portals Surveys. The Q2 report majors on the European region, with key comparisons to Asia Pacific, Latin America, and North America. The full GSA Mobile Portals 2002 Q2 Survey can be downloaded from the web site (www.gsacom.com).
GSA is also participating in the EDGE Operators’ Forum taking place on Wednesday 19th June in Singapore. Endorsed by GSA, the EDGE Operators’ Forum brings together the vendors and leading operators who are deploying or considering EDGE as part of their 3G strategies. This is the fifth meeting and is being hosted by Ericsson, and is expected to attract several operators from the Asia Pacific region and elsewhere.
As GPRS network launches accelerate with some 150 expected live by the end of 2002, and as MMS services come into play, consumers are getting their first real taste of content-rich 3G multimedia services and applications. GSA President Alan Hadden expands:
“The technology is very clearly in place for 3G, and it is essential that the focus shifts away from a technology message towards providing and marketing useful, desirable services that end-users will pay for. MMS represents an important transition to data-centric mobile services, and is a key bridge between a voice and non-voice revenue focus. GPRS is the enabling technology platform for GSM evolution to 3G using complementary EDGE and WCDMA radio access methods. Progress will be incremental. The good news is that we are firmly on track with the evolution to 3G.”
There are currently over 70 companies working on GSA programs, representing the leading suppliers of GSM/3G products, systems, services and applications globally. Companies include:
3G Mobilize, A4 Media Oy, ADC, AirNet Communications, Akumiitti, Alternis, Antenova, Argogroup, Ascom Business Systems, Bechtel Telecommunications, Benefon, Bluefish Technologies, Cambia Networks, Cash-U, Cellebrum, Compaq, Comsys Communications & Signal Processing Ltd., Convergys, DigiPlug, dotEnable.com, EMC2, Eplication, Ericsson, e-Tek Mobile, European Telecom, ExtraTainment, Filtronic, Hewlett-Packard, Hotsip AB, Hymobile Software Solutions, Huawei, HZB Technologies, Infocell Telecom, Inova Technology, Insonify, Intel, ITfinity Solutions, Jataayu Software, LocatioNet, Logica, Lucent Technologies, Magic4, Manac Infotech, Measuresoft Development, Mobicus, MobileAware, Mobile-Mind, Mobilotech, Motorola, mPrest Technologies, Niragongo, Nokia, Ossidian Technologies, Oxygen Technologies, Panasonic/Matsushita, Portel Systems, Qositel, Schema, SchlumbergerSema, ScoreBoard, Sensible Group, Siemens, Smartner Information Systems, Sonim Technologies Inc, Speedwise, Tekelec, Telemessage, ts.com, TTPCom, Vision Inc, WIT-Software, Yarosa and ZTE Corporation.
