North Yorkshire Police Upgrade Their Network To Get Better Connected

Added : ( Tue May 07 2002 )

North Yorkshire Police has invested £5.4million to replace its existing communications network with a state-of-the-art integrated voice and data service. Fully managed by BT, the new Wide Area Network (WAN), set to go live this August, will link 43 North Yorkshire police sites and free-up police personnel so they can spend more time on the beat.

The new WAN technology, managed by BT, will supply a Local Area Network (LAN) ensuring suitable infrastructure is in place to meet existing and future communications requirements. One immediate benefit of the new system – which will increase network capacity by seven times – is that it will reduce the congestion that both the public and police voice users experience with the current network.

The five-year contract, fully serviced by BT, will provide Proactive Fault Management, ensuring network health is checked every fifteen minutes. Furthermore, quality of service reports will mean the requirements of police users are being met, while regular reviews carried out by BT will ensure that the Force’s day-to-day communications run both more smoothly and more cost efficiently.

The new tailor made-network can be reshaped within the five-year contract so that the North Yorkshire Force, responsible for policing one of the largest areas of any UK force, will be able to maintain its goal of continued investment in new technology.

Paul Ramsey, head of information systems, North Yorkshire Police, said: “We are delighted to have signed this five-year contract with BT. This commitment means we will have in place a first class and comprehensive network which gives us a robust infrastructure to build onto for the future to allow us to take advantage of developments in technology.”

Andy Hudson, general manager, BT Justice & Police, said: “Apart from modernising their communications, North Yorkshire Police will also benefit from the flexibility that a comprehensive network will bring ensuring that they utilise it to its full capacity and potential taking advantage of current and future functionality.”
