Sherborne House
Sherborne House is an 18th century building with a Tudor wing which looks out over the town of Sherborne in north Dorset. William Macready, a Victorian actor manager was the most notable occupant who had many visits from his friend Charles Dickens. A central feature and treasure within the House is a mural by Sir James Thornhill. There is now an agreement that the grounds of the House will provide access to work by Elizabeth Frink.
Site
Regional artists were invited to apply to use space within the house and grounds during Dorset Art Weeks. The largest open studios event in the UK, Dorset Art Weeks is being launched at Sherborne House on the 23rd May by the sculptor Sir Anthony Caro. A small selection of drawings made in connection with his most recent work will be on display in the House.
The exhibition 'Site' in the House and grounds will include the following:
Greta Berlin will arrange large sculptures on the front lawn. Many people are familiar with Greta Berlin’s work having seen it in connection with Broomhill Sculpture Park.
Celine Desert’s installation in the corridor gallery uses light mirrors and feathers to present the dilemmas felt between a sense of duty and a desire for freedom.
Karen Hansen using furniture skills, wood and mirrors has designed an interactive construction that reflects and creates a kalaedoscopic image of its surroundings.
Frances Hatch presents illuminated found objects in the cellar and forecourt of the gallery revelling in the humble beauty of the discarded natural world.
Carolyne Kardia is building a sculpture in one of the traditional rooms of the house using fragile folds of plaster.
George Meyrick’s two positive and negative architectural structures relate to each other across the space of the gallery.
Matt Sampson captures the drama and atmospheres of American Buildings in his photographs.
Cat Sivertsen The Sir James Thornhill mural is the catalyst for Cat Sivertsen’s installation on the old tennis courts.
Amanda Wallwork transforms Sherborne House with large banners hung from its roof, designed with reference to the architecture and plans of the House.
Sally Watkins invites us to consider the history of the House as a school with her use of sound light and text in the toilet block.
