Cedar Telecommunications Limited and Hughes Network Systems Europe launch “StreamBeam” the first Europe-wide 2-way Broadband Internet Service

Cedar Telecommunications Limited is collaborating with the Hughes Network Systems (HNS) European satellite services organisation, HOT Telecommunications, to deliver the first two way broadband satellite service across Europe called StreamBeam

As the leading telecommunications provider in Europe, HOT is providing satellite bandwidth services and equipment which will enable Cedar to deliver a full range of Broadband Internet Services, StreamBeam with particular emphasis on remote areas not served by ADSL (asynchronous digital subscriber lines). Estimates are that in the UK alone 46% of subscribers cannot access ADSL services *

“Significant numbers of businesses requiring broadband access have not been able to obtain such services from the traditional suppliers of telecommunications services,” explained Stuart Firth, CEO of Cedar Telecommunications, a subsidiary of the global consulting, applications, and outsourcing firm Cedar Group Plc. “With StreamBeam everyone will have access to broadband regardless of their location. Our offer is an entirely scaleable service and we cater for single users through to large enterprises requiring broadband LAN infrastructures.”

Several companies have announced an intention to, launch a satellite broadband service but no company has provided a turnkey solution that caters for every eventuality both geographically and performance wise. StreamBeam costs £600 to set up and from £180 for access per month.

Through their relationship with HOT Telecommunications, Cedar has clearly stolen a lead on other pretenders to the satellite broadband market.

Clearly the UK market is ready for, and eagerly awaiting the arrival of, a broadband solution that everyone can access. This point has been clearly noted in recent UK government reports, not least “Connecting Scotland” and “UK on line: the broadband future” as well as the work undertaken by the Department of Public Enterprise (DoPE) in the Republic of Ireland.
The latter clearly identifies satellite as the only cost effective solution for rural areas.

Cedar insists that its offering is not just suitable for rural areas. Said Firth: “There is no doubt that rural areas will immediately benefit by our service as it is available to them now however we are not directing our attentions purely at this market.”

Cedar, working with the DoPE in Ireland, provided a pilot service for the provision of Broadband Internet Services to rural communities and recently installed a system in a school located on the remote Clare Island off the west coast of Ireland. ADSL, the telecommunications product that provides broadband access on fixed wire, is a competitively priced product, although not generally available having serious limitations regarding the distance the user can be situated from a supporting telephone exchange.

“What ADSL has done however is to set an expectation of both price and availability,” said Firth. “Cedar has met that level of expectation with its entry level service whereas on higher performance services Cedar offer a significantly lower cost than current ADSL offerings. Cedar’s Broadband Satellite Services are available now for all users situated anywhere across Europe”.

Cedar is currently entering into reseller agreements with European ISPs who wish to offer its broadband service to their clients.

HOT Telecommunications appear equally enthused by the relationship.
