FIGHTING PROSTATE CANCER

Cancer experts predict a dramatic rise in the incidence of PROSTATE CANCER

The occurrence of the disease has been rising steadily in the last three decades with around 22,000 cases being diagnosed each year in the UK alone.

In 2005 IT WILL BECOME THE COMMONEST MEN’S CANCER overtaking
lung cancer, the current No.1 among men. Mortality is high and 9,600 men died from the condition in 1999.

In the United States, the American Cancer Society urges all men over fifty to have tests. Those who come from high risk groups, such as Afro-Caribbean men or others with a family history of the disease, are advised to go for screening from the age of forty five years.

We in the UK have no national screening programme and public perception of the disease is still very hazy. Embarrassment continues to be a potent factor when the question of Prostate Health arises, as over a quarter of men still find it difficult to approach their GP and ask for advice.

A P P L E, the Association of Prostate Patients in London & Essex is committed to raising public awareness and to encourage men to seek advice early, as PROSTATE CANCER is responsive to treatment if it is caught soon enough.

This year’s National Prostate Cancer Awareness Week is taking place from 21st March until 27th March. On Thursday 24th March from 2.00 p.m. until 6.00 p.m. APPLE will be working with the eminent urology consultant Mr. P. Shridhar and his colleagues to hold an Open Day about PROSTATE HEALTH at Boardman House, 64 Broadway, Stratford featuring visual displays, and informative literature.

Urology Clinical Staff will be present to answer individual questions giving general advice and information about various conditions associated with the prostate gland. Topics covered will include Prevention of Prostate Cancer; Diet and Prostate Cancer; Benign Prostate Conditions; Inflammation of the Prostate Gland; Erectile Dysfunction; PSA Screening and Continence.

We urge men to take advantage of the opportunity on offer and act now to safeguard their health by attending the Open Day and finding out about this potential threat to their well being.
