Elected representatives congratulate Ayr Guildry on celebrations of Ayr’s great birthday in 2005

LOCAL elected representatives have been queuing up to lavish praise on Ayr Guildry, the organisation of the town’s business people, for all their efforts to organise Ayr 800, the year-long calendar of events to celebrate the 800th anniversary in 2005 of Ayr being granted its Charter as a Royal Burgh.

Sandra Osborne MP said:

“I congratulate Ayr Guildry and the many other groups and organisations who are taking part in Ayr 800. We are fortunate to have a rich tapestry of history and culture in Ayr, and the recognition of our status as a Royal Burgh for 800 years is an excellent opportunity to celebrate our past, as well as look forward to a prosperous future. The ambitious calendar of events cannot fail to attract visitors from near and far, which can only enhance local business and tourism. I look forward to a very busy and enjoyable year for the whole community.”

Cathy Jamieson MSP:

“Ayr has a fascinating history and this is a great opportunity for us to celebrate some of the famous, and infamous, events in its past. It’s also important to remember that Ayr has an exciting present and future.

“I am proud to represent part of Ayr and I have found it to have a vibrant and active community spirit. I hope that people will take the opportunity to celebrate the last 800 years and look forward to a confident, exciting future.”

Phil Gallie MSP:

“What a problem Ayr 800 poses, the expression as to how to fit a quart into a pint pot (Imperial measures) comes to mind. The proposed programme holds something for everyone, and no doubt will be further stretched as 2005 gets underway. Well done to Ayr Guildry and all their willing and inventive supporters.”

And Scottish Enterprise Ayrshire chief executive Evelyn McCann added:

“Ayrshire has a rich and varied history and I’m delighted that Ayr Guildry has been able to organise such a diverse programme celebrating the past, present and future of the area has been pulled together.

“Tourism plays an important role in the economy of Ayrshire, and I have no doubt that Ayr 800 will bring even more visitors to the area.

“I’m delighted that the whole community has got behind the Ayr 800 initiative and I'm sure the programme of events will prove popular with both tourists and local people.”
