Hoboken, N.J., November 29, 2004 – Global publisher John Wiley & Sons, Inc., today proudly announced the upcoming one-year anniversary of the journal Pediatric Blood & Cancer. Launched in January 2004, Pediatric Blood & Cancer is considered to be a leading journal in the field, having the support of the most influential pediatric hematology/oncology societies in the world, as well as an editorial focus that integrates numerous specialties into one discipline.
In the December 2004 issue, Editor-in-Chief Robert J. Arceci, M.D., Ph.D., reflects on the journal’s many accomplishments over the past year, as well the goals that lay ahead. He writes, “the decision to start Pediatric Blood & Cancer arose out of the desire of the International Society of Paediatric Oncology (SIOP), the American Society of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology (ASPHO) as well as the International Society of Pediatric Surgical Oncology (IPSO) and the Histiocyte Society to develop a more comprehensive and higher impact platform for reporting the best clinical, translational and laboratory investigations relevant to serious blood disorders and cancer in children and adolescents….I believe Pediatric Blood & Cancer has gotten off to a tremendous start.”
Among the journal’s many accomplishments in its inaugural year is the implementation of Manuscript Central (http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/pbc), the electronic submission and review software that provides real-time monitoring of the status of manuscripts, reviews, and journal statistics, and substantially reduces the time required to process manuscripts from acceptance to publication. In his commentary, Dr. Arceci reviews other major highlights:
· An entirely new editorial board was formed that reflects both the sponsoring societies and an international presence. There is no pre-determined set number of board members for this journal, and new members will be added to address needs as they arise.
· Pediatric Blood & Cancer now publishes 14 editions a year for a total of over 1450 editorial pages. Two editions are devoted to the abstracts from the annual meetings of SIOP, ASPHO, IPSO and the Histiocyte Society.
· Submissions have come from 33 countries, with 47 percent of the manuscripts coming from the U.S.
· Reviews and commentaries have been significantly expanded over the year to complement the clinical and laboratory reports.
· Diversity of manuscripts remains a priority in terms of hematology, transplantation and immunology-related areas of investigation. The journal is committed to publishing work in these areas as well as pediatric oncology.
· Pediatric Blood & Cancer encourages reports from developing countries that advance the field in understanding the biology and presentation of disorders in different parts of the world, as well as in epidemiology, treatment and outcomes.
“Pediatric Blood & Cancer is committed to become the premier voice in our field in part through the publication of important and timely laboratory, translational, and clinical studies,” Dr. Arceci writes. “The success of Pediatric Blood & Cancer should serve our discipline and sponsoring societies well. At its very heart, Pediatric Blood & Cancer represents those professional societies and all of you who contribute and learn from its content.”
