The Sokoke Cat – a very rare cat breed, perhaps the rarest cat breed in the world is now here in the UK.
The Sokoke (or African Shorthair) originates from the Sokoke Arabuke Forest on the Kenya coast, one of the few remaining but rapidly diminishing rainforests in East Africa (which itself supports many other endangered species, including six globally threatened birds). Only cats originally imported from here can be registered as purebred. In 1978 a Kenyan farmer found a litter of kittens in a coconut plantation. Like many African species these cats are virtually extinct in the wild. This breed preserves unique genes that is unknown among traditional cat breeds. They remain a real feline mystery. Sokokes became known in Europe in the 20th century and recognised by Fife in 1993.
Approximately 100 domesticated individuals are registered and there are about 30 breeding cats in the world.
Sokokes are moderate sized, long-legged and have a very dense shiny short coat without any undercoat. They hardly shed at all. They have an African tabby pattern which is often compared to the cheetah, called kadzonzo by the local people, which translated means ‘tree bark’. They are usually light brown, dark chestnut and chocolate and are very muscular and elegant. Their back legs are longer than the front legs, for speed. The head of the Sokoke is rather small with a wide muzzle and well defined cheekbones and chin. Broad ears with slightly rounded tips. Almond shaped eyes vary in colour from amber to light green and is outlined with a darker colour.
If you are looking for a cat that is playful and interactive, almost ‘dog like’, loving and affectionate yet sometimes a little aloof then the Sokoke is a terrific breed.
As the breed is almost extinct it is of great importance that new Sokoke owners take interest in the breed and work together to preserve it.
