‘Text Sex and Cyber flirting’
40% would request sex via SMS messaging service.
Glasgow – July 5th, 2001 – A nationwide survey of 3000 people’s text messaging and WAP habits across the UK has revealed some startling results about current textual relationships. Saw-you.com, the Glasgow based mobile Internet service, commissioned the research following the launch of their award winning interactive Messaging application.
Sex: Battle of the Texes!!!
· A shocking 40% of Women admitted that they would blatantly request SEX via text messages. Go for it girls!!
· Girls were also 10% more likely to use a chatroom to find a sexual partner .. beating the guys 40% to 30%. Again making the girls more textually adventurous.
· Both sexes agreed, 65%, that they would flirt more using SMS than in real life. With Guys scoring slightly higher.
· Lets get physical. Both sexes were keen to translate virtual contact into something more physical with 63% of those asked wanting to meet chatroom texters in person.
· Girls pip the guys by 5% again when it comes to flirting anonymously with people they fancy .. coming in at 57%
So we’ve got good and bad news for the guys: first the bad news .. “the girls are more textually active” and now the good news “ the girls are more textually active” !!! Who the hell do you think they’re flirting with!!
Overall:
Who’s Texting Who ?
· 90% of people send more than 1 message every day of every week. With almost 40% sending more than 4 messages every day, and 20 % weighing in at a mind-blowing 7 messages or more.
· Texting usually gets presented as a Teen Phenomenon but this survey highlights a huge shift in use. The power users now appear to be mid-to-late twenties and evenly balanced across the 15-25 demographic.
· 70% of both sexes use SMS to flirt openly.
· Further to this a whopping 82% of people thought that sending saucy text messages and e-mails could spice up a relationship.
More bad news for WAP:
· WAP usage was low with a 20% user base amongst the 18-25 year olds. Perhaps reflecting the lack of appropriate social services in the new medium. Nasdaq share prices are not big with the socially active!!
· The figures got slightly better across the 25-30 band - beginning to rise to 27%.
Chat must Change:
We’ve got bad news for people who want to transfer standard Chatroom formats to SMS or Mobile Internet.
· A very low 20% of users saw existing subject-orientated chat rooms as being relevant to mobile Internet. Chatrooms are considered to be where people hang-out if they DON’T have a life…Mobile Internet is designed for those that do!!
· However, 57% of females want to chat to people they are looking at anonymously… proving they were hugely in favour of location based chat, where the rooms directly reflect the physical social space they are sitting in. Again beating the guys by over 5%.
· This trend is further backed up by the fact that a staggering 80% would like Instant Messaging. Saw-you.com offer a unique combination of these services.
Conclusion:
With the world now fully submerged in ‘text-mania’ (a monumental 1 billion text messages were sent in the UK, in June 2001 alone), these findings display some very interesting trends.
Women are taking the lead, no doubt about it. It would appear that technology offers the fairer sex a more discreet channel to turn up the fun dial…and they’re taking advantage of it. Women have never been strangers to telephones, so I suppose we shouldn’t really be surprised by their prowess in the area of telecommunication. What is really exciting is that women are taking the lead and the guys are sure to follow or risk missing all the fun.
What was once considered to be the ultimate ‘man’s toy’ is proving to be a highly effective way for modern women to attract a partner.
Mike Kinsella, CEO of Saw-you.com commented, “ There are quite a few surprises here! Many would naturally assume that guys would lead the way with provocative messaging but clearly that’s not the case. I guess girls just wanna have fun!”
“Text messaging is a great, fun way to meet people. Most people think that all you can do is SMS your friends, but there is a wonderful new array of value-add services that take it way beyond that point. Saw-You allows users to SMS anyone they see without having their phone number….think of the fun you could have with that on a Friday night …your options are as limited as your imagination.” he concluded.
Further key findings include:
4 Women in almost all age groups were more positive than men about using an Internet chat room to find a partner.
4 63% of the overall respondents said that they would be willing to meet in person, someone they had met on the net. Overall, men were more positive about the idea with results as high as 81% in the 15 - 17 year old age group.
4 57% of the overall respondents thought that e-mail and text messaging had replaced traditional letter writing
4 Instant messaging and search engines were the top two requests for WAP facilities. Three quarters of the respondents requested instant messaging and 62% would like to see search engines made available.
4 Interestingly 77% of the heavy text message senders (15 or more a day) are men and 23% are women, suggesting that men may use SMS messaging as a way to avoid unnecessary phone conversations.
4 61% of men and 39% of women would consider sending ‘fancy a shag’, to someone they found attractive, via text message. Further the majority of these respondents came from the Midlands and the Northwest.
4 The 25 to 30-age band were more comfortable with asking for sex with their phone and are more likely to use their phones to flirt and check ‘what’s on’.
