A website on a Sri Lankan from the village of Ambaraluwa is provoking huge interest among European tourists and has registered hundreds of hits from around the world.
The story of the life and times of W.Sumith Wickramasinghe went online three weeks ago - it is fast becoming one of the most popular Sri Lankan websites. Wickramasinghe was born in Ambaraluwa and attended Ananda College in Colombo. He went on to become a leading motor assessor with the Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation.
The tribute site to W.Sumith Wickramasinghe contains fascinating insights into the life of the island of Sri Lanka. The website notes that the 'story of Sumith Wickramasinghe is a story of Sri Lanka.'
It has proved a real hit in Europe.Britain is number one where the island's tourism market is concerned. There has been a real increase in the numbers of British tourists visiting Sri Lanka over the last few years.
However Britons travelling abroad are seeking new vistas, new adventures, wanting to 'explore the unexplored' in their desire to get away from the standard travel package of beach and hotel.
Ambaraluwa presents a 'window' into rural Sri Lanka hence the popularity of the website on W.Sumith Wickramasinghe.
'UK Travellers would be very interested in exploring places like Ambaraluwa - unfortunately there isn't even a guide book on Ambaraluwa or present day guides - even the well known brands - hardly mention rural villages of Sri Lanka. There are only one or two holiday homes or tourist accommodation in this particular district in Gampaha. A website, like the one on Sumith Wickramasinghe is very refreshing, it gives travellers an opportunity to explore OFF THE BEATEN TRACK areas of Sri Lanka. Perhaps this is something the Sri Lanka Tourist Board should look at in promoting yet another facet of Sri Lanka,' said Jonathan Peirce a travel agent. He noted that there needs to be more holiday homes in the area to cater to visitors.
