PRESS RELEASE – 26th July 2004
The UKAWP – Promoting Professional Planners
The UK Association of Wedding Planners has been founded by two well respected wedding planners, Bernadette Chapman and Tamryn Kirby, with one main aim – to promote professionalism in wedding planning.
Films such as ‘The Wedding Planner’ and ‘Father of the Bride’ have raised the profile of wedding planners and co-ordinators in the UK over recent years, as a consequence more couples than ever before are hiring helpers to plan their perfect day. This increased popularity has encouraged many wedding loving women to set themselves up in business as wedding consultants, so how do prospective clients know where to find experienced planners?
Unlike a number of bodies that advertise for members and accept all applicants on receipt of payment, the UKAWP requires proof of professional competence before a company is admitted. Members must also agree to abide by a ‘code of conduct’ and all marketing material must be clear and correct. Couples can therefore be assured that companies advertising themselves to be members of the UKAWP, are experienced and dedicated.
The UKAWP website gives couples information on what to consider before choosing a suitable planner or co-ordinator for their wedding. Lists of tasks that a consultant can undertake for clients are also included, and a comprehensive database of approved members can be found on the website.
Weddings are becoming increasingly complex and all couples spend hours agonising over plans and details to ensure their wedding day is wonderful. Bernadette Chapman firmly believes in the aims of the UKAWP and says “We want to recognise companies who have invested time and energy into creating a well managed and well planned business, whilst also providing a comfort factor for couples.” “Deciding which suppliers to involve in your day is also difficult,” adds Tamryn “and this is even harder when you’re handing over the planning or management of the entire event to an outsider. The UKAWP wants to make this easier and raise the profile of professional planning in the UK.”
Bernadette Chapman is the founder of Dream Occasions (www.dream-occasions.co.uk) and Tamryn Kirby is the founder of ‘TK on the Day’ (www.tkontheday.co.uk). They have worked on a wide variety of weddings in locations across the UK and are well known figures in the industry through their work with various publications, internet sites and other media outlets.
