Mercury Interactive Delivers Web Performance Testing and Monitoring
Solutions for Streaming Media

Company Teams with RealNetworks and Microsoft to Improve Quality of
Streaming Media

Camberley, UK - December 15th, 2000- To help companies manage and improve
the performance of Web applications that include streaming media, Mercury
Interactive Corp. (Nasdaq: MERQ) has announced availability of Web
performance management solutions for testing and monitoring streaming media.
E-Businesses with sites that provide dynamic audio and video content can use
these solutions before and after deployment to ensure the performance and
scalability necessary to provide a positive end-user experience.

Support for testing and monitoring Web applications using RealPlayer® and
RealSystem® Server 8 and earlier versions of RealServerT, from
RealNetworks®, Inc. (Nasdaq: RNWK), or Windows Media Server, from Microsoft
Corp. (Nasdaq: MSFT), is available immediately in Mercury Interactive's
LoadRunner® load testing software, and ActiveTestT hosted load testing
e-service. Streaming media support will be available within 45 days for the
company's real-time performance monitoring software, Topaz®, and monitoring
e-service, ActiveWatchT.

To develop these solutions, Mercury Interactive has elected to license
technology from the industry's leading streaming media providers,
RealNetworks, Inc. and Microsoft. This technology allows LoadRunner and will
allow Topaz customers to automatically capture user interactions with the
streaming player in order to generate scripts, which can then be replayed
during testing or monitoring. Mercury Interactive has also created
integrated performance monitors specifically designed for measuring the
quality of the audio and video stream. The monitors help determine end-user
experience with metrics that include time to connect, quality of stream
download, number of lost or late packets, buffering time and current
bandwidth, as well as the number of active connections to the server and
total bandwidth required.

"Streaming media is rapidly becoming an integral part of E-Business. As a
leading streaming technology provider, Microsoft is committed to ensuring
that these applications perform to the highest standards," said Will Poole,
vice president, Digital Media Division at Microsoft. "Working with Mercury
Interactive, a clear leader in application performance management, we can
better ensure that customers and consumers get the high quality experience
they have come to expect with the rich dynamic content streaming
technologies can deliver."

Performance Management Solutions Ensure Scalable Streaming Applications
The addition of streaming servers and streaming players to the traditional
Web infrastructure adds yet another layer on top of an already complex
system. With the addition of streaming-specific technologies, LoadRunner and
ActiveTest stress customers' streaming applications by emulating thousands
of real-life streaming media user sessions on both the Web and streaming
servers in order to identify and isolate performance bottlenecks. This
allows customers to assess the impact of hundreds or thousands of concurrent
users on the quality and delivery of their dynamic audio and video content
prior to going live. Customers will be able to reuse the load test scripts
to monitor the performance of streaming applications using Topaz and
ActiveWatch.

Once the application goes live, Topaz and ActiveWatch, provide the ability
to detect and diagnose streaming application performance problems. Most
importantly, Topaz and ActiveWatch correlate any streaming application
performance issues with their root cause in the Web infrastructure.
"In recent performance tests using LoadRunner's new streaming media
technology myplay was able to successfully test its proprietary streaming
infrastructure to verify load capacity," said Mike Malloy, director of
quality assurance at myplay, inc. "LoadRunner provided us the ability to
generate extensive system loads, predict system performance, and ultimately,
provide a better user experience to myplay.com customers."
