Pressbox (Press Release) - BEATING THE BUGS: NEW WEB SITE FOR SOFTWARE DEVELOPERS PROVIDES UNIQUE REFERENCE SOURCE ON SOFTWARE ERRORS

New online information source for software developer community focuses on applications built in C and C++

11 December 2000 –– Softbugs.co.uk is a new web site for the software developer community, providing a unique source of information for anyone involved in developing or writing software. The site is sponsored by Reasoning, the software quality specialists.

Softbugs.co.uk has information on good programming techniques, tips on how to avoid common pitfalls and full details of specific programming errors in each language. This includes methods of identifying problems such as memory leaks, null pointer dereferences, bad deallocation, out of bounds array access faults and uninitialised variables. Reasoning’s knowledge of defects and common programmer errors is second to none, based on sixteen years of specialist expertise in the field. To date, the company has inspected over a billion lines of code world-wide.

Commenting on the launch of the new web site, Reasoning’s UK managing director, John Rodford, said ‘Eighty per cent of the world’s software is built in C and C++, so by identifying the most common faults encountered when writing applications in these languages, the quality of the final release can be significantly improved.

‘We aim for softbugs.co.uk to become the first port of call for programmers interested in eliminating defects and developing their programming skills. Improving the quality of software is of paramount importance, not only in the e-commerce sector, but for applications in use in any industry. Too many easy-to-find errors like memory leaks are allowed to enter undetected into released software, which can be disastrous.’

Reasoning is committed to improving and modernising software. Its flagship software inspection service, InstantQA™, combines automated software inspection technology with independent verification and validation techniques performed by highly skilled software quality consultants and engineers. This process provides one hundred per cent coverage of the source code, documents all defects found and can document other quality issues to speed the identification and repair of faults. InstantQA can be employed before, during, or after traditional testing to improve the effectiveness of test cycles.

As part of its commitment to global improvements in software quality, Reasoning has just published Building Great Software in C and C++, a comprehensive guide to common defects and best practice in writing software. The book also offers techniques for good programming gleaned from the enormous amount of software engineering research published over the last twenty-five years.
