COMPANIES SHARE PROFITABLE WAYS OF WORKING

Specialist engineering company Strachan & Henshaw Ltd has discovered an excellent method of generating profitable ideas and more importantly found ways to drive these through to action.

Senior project engineer Roger Taylor believes the DTI scheme, Inside UK Enterprise (IUKE) assists in meeting the companyˇ¦s objective of increasing productivity and profitability. Essentially a best practice exchange programme, IUKE helps businesses learn from other businesses.

Strachan & Henshaw personnel first attended a site visit over two years ago, and since then 80 employees have been on approximately 40 visits, including British Airways, Rolls Royce, Birmingham Midshires and CRL. A further 10 are planned for later this year.

Taylor explains: ˇ§The scheme has already generated a significant number of ideas for our company that will help us to grow and adapt to meet the challenges ahead, for example, differing approaches to Business Excellence, use of benchmarking and performance targets, variations of procurement strategy and addressing staff cultural issues.ˇ¨

He explains that the company sends a wide cross section of people on the visits: ˇ§The aim is to raise awareness - at all levels - of how other businesses are run. This way, people think of the ideas themselves, rather than having these imposed by others. We then ensure someone drives the project forward. Successful business improvements come from the grass roots.ˇ¨

ˇ§To build a broader awareness of those companies that reflect our aspirations, we have visited organisations such as British Airways, Rolls Royce, Frederick Woolley Ltd, Sandusky Walmsley Ltd several times in order to build up a thorough picture of how their businesses are supported and developed internally.ˇ¨

Overall Taylor recommends the opportunity to share best practice: ˇ§Companies should definitely get involved if theyˇ¦re looking to improve.ˇ¨

Companies interested in becoming involved in the scheme either as a host company or to learn more about top achievers can contact IUKE direct on 01730 235012 or book on-line at www.iuke.co.uk
