“Passing the Baton” by Jean Helen Ramm is published

A fascinating collection of short stories about the real world

About the Book:

'We're all in a relay.... you can pass the baton in all kinds of ways.'
Life's like that, not a race but full of challenges and hope. Passing the Baton contains exquisitely written short stories from the real world, experiences with which readers can relate - old age, youngsters, drink problems, heartaches... universal human dilemmas.
There's elderly George, living in 'cloud cuckoo land'. Ethel, such an old dear, but was that pigeon alive when she put it in the microwave? And 'orrid little Tommy, fed on fast food while his mother loses herself in DVDs.
Thought-provoking, but with flashes of humour and interlinking amusing short dialogues. 'Fear and giggles all beaten together and ready for the oven.'

Excerpt from “Passing the Baton”:

“Very late that night when George was in bed, Diane started to go over in her mind the various items of clothes she would need for her work on the liner. The more she planned and became convinced that she was going, the more her feelings for her father flooded out of her in the form of tears, but her resolve to go never faltered. She was going for him as well as herself and her mother.
When next day she told of her preparations during dominoes, and of the care plan for George to be taken gradually into local residential care, Ted listened and nodded in agreement. He knew it would be a local care home and he would be able to visit, just like now. The game would go on. He enjoyed it as much as George. When Diane put down her next domino George sat back and looked at her, then he smiled. His old, quiet, warm smile. Had he understood? He signalled to her to put out her hand and pressed a domino into her clutches. She sat clasping this domino, her eyes wandering from her father to Ted. It was the double six.
When she checked her emails all the conditions of the project were made clear. Copy sign and return. Then a message to open. Diane stared in disbelief. Simon Latimer. He had put her name forward. She read ‘Looking forward to our project. Want to take you on again, scatting or otherwise. I’ve been working on my flexibility.’
She reread it and knew. Divorce or not, they were on again. Sometimes sadness made joy more subtle, more poignant. Can you plan for spontaneity? Perhaps not.”

Amazon review:

5.0 out of 5 stars This was a great read
Verified Purchase

I chose to rate this book 5 stars as once I started to read it I could not stop until I had reached the end. I enjoyed the reality and honesty of the stories. I particularly liked the interconnecting domestic and social scenes, which allowed a smile between the very serious and underlying sadness of some of the stories. As a Royal Borough of Greenwich/Plumstead resident it was great to read about familiar landmarks. Thank you to the author for an enjoyable read. Sonia Harris, Senior Probation Officer/blogger
