Pressbox (Press Release) - Retired teacher and mechanical engineer D A Horncastle is sailing once again towards the book charts with his latest five-star-rated adventure novel, South Sea Fever.
The 83-year-old from Yorkshire harboured ambitions of becoming a writer throughout his successful career in the classroom and workshop.
And he is now making up for lost time with the arrival of his fourth historical novel to add to his series of westerns and golfing centenaries that were published in the 1990s.
South Sea Fever is a gripping story, which has been described by captivated readers as being ‘eye-opening’, ‘well-written’ and ‘an engaging romp through 18th century London’.
Although always dabbling with the written word, it wasn’t until D A retired from teaching mathematics, that he concentrated fully on becoming an author.
He explained: “I always cherished the idea of becoming a writer.
“On retirement I took it up seriously and researched and wrote the centenary histories of two golf clubs in my area - both of which were very well received.
“I wrote articles for a local history magazine, speeches for people, book reviews and even had a stab at poetry.
“I also wrote a series of westerns for Robert Hale publishers which were reprinted in paperback.
“Altogether, including South Sea Fever, I believe I now have well over one and a half million words in print.”
Set in 1720, South Sea Fever follows the fortunes of Kate Francis after she witnesses her father’s death at the hands of a notorious highwayman.
D A Horncastle’s impressive ability to combine accurate historical settings with a thrilling storyline has made his novels popular.
He added: “South Sea Fever sees Kate survive the highwayman’s ambush and she struggles on until she reaches the estate of Harry Collins, the Earl of Brideswell.
“It soon become apparent that the finances of the Brideswell estate are in parlous state and Harry needs to find a solution.
“The advice is to invest in South Sea stock but Harry is cautious.
“Although Kate's arrival presents a diversion, neither of them realise just how complicated the outcome to both their problems can be.”
D A’s impressive canon of historical novels include Whither Thou Goest, The Flickering Flame and The Blazing Fire.
