Yorkshire pig farmer’s piggy tales in new book

Added: (Wed Nov 29 2023)

Pressbox (Press Release) - Pig farming’s loss is literature’s gain as the recently retired Michael James has just published the first part of his incredible story.
The 68-year-old granddad spent half a century as a pigman in his native Yorkshire.
And since walking away from his piggy friends, he’s taken the time to reflect on and chart his unbelievable career.
18194 Days in the Life of a Pigman has already racked up a lengthy string of five-star reviews since its recent release.
Captivated critics have described the highly entertaining memoirs as ‘superb’, ‘many laughs’, and ‘a brilliant book’.
Reviewer Natalie Fowler stated: “I read it in a day.”
Michael, who grew up in Hessle, became a pig farmer at the age of 17.
And the next five decades of his working life provided plenty of hilarious mishaps, many unexpected outcomes, and an authoritative look at how the industry has changed – for the better.
Michael explained: “I hope that people without any farming background will see how we care for our animals.”
“And those readers who are associated with pig farming in any way will relate to some of my moments.”
18194 Days in the Life of a Pigman follows the fortunes of teenage Michael who, despite having no farming background, secures a pig industry apprenticeship.
From the early days of regularly having his eyes opened, his memoirs take readers all the way through to him managing a modern freedom farrowing unit.
Michael added: “18194 Days in the Life of a Pigman is a unique insight into my life - from leaving home at 17 and starting work as a naive young apprentice, to my retirement at 67.”
“I hopefully relate how and why it all started for me.”
“And I’ve shown how things have changed over the years.”
“I believe 18194 Days in the Life of a Pigman makes for an easy, amusing, and enlightening read.”
As well as fashion and music trends, Michael’s memoirs are also embellished with illustrations by his daughter, Zoe.
The second part of 18194 Days in the Life of a Pigman has now been published and is available for readers to continue following his tale.
And following the successful release of part one and part two of his story, Michael is also currently starting the first draft of a novel.
