Pressbox (Press Release) -
A Yorkshire grandfather’s lockdown challenge has led to him publishing his first novel.
Barry Claughton was looking for something to fill his days during the pandemic when he decided to write a story for his grandson.
Almost a year on, the 78-year-old former local government officer from near Leeds has just published Adventure Boys.
His highly accomplished coming-of-age story is set around his beloved Yorkshire Dales.
Although Barry finished and published his novel, he’s still waiting for nine-year-old Eddie to produce his lockdown story.
The former local government officer explained: “I got the idea for Adventure Boys during Covid lockdown in 2020.
“I thought I would write a story for my grandson to read, and asked him to write me a story as well.
“I thought it would occupy him in difficult times.
“I wrote Adventure Boys and I am still waiting for Eddie’s - obviously he wasn’t as bored as I was.
“The story is based partly on my experiences when growing up.
“Adventure Boys is set in Wharfedale near to Otley, but it could have been anywhere between Menston, Addingham, Skipton or Harrogate - all areas of exceptional scenic beauty.”
Adventure Boys follows the fortunes of teenagers Eddie and Simon as they take advantage of the rolling hills that surround them.
But their friendship changes when girls arrive on the farm to stable their horses.
Barry added: “Eddie and Simon find friendship exploring together, working on a farm and larking about in the countryside.
“But they make a life changing discovery – and they also meet two girls who arrive at Simon’s farm.
“Eddie realises his friendship with Simon is changing and that life goes on.
“But an accident finally leads Eddie to realise how lucky he is to have such good friends.
“Other people have read Adventure Boys and their reactions were positive.”
Barry is currently considering a sequel to his debut novel.
