Worcestershire writer inspired by surrogacy for debut book

Pressbox (Press Release) - A counsellor from Worcestershire hopes her debut novella will bring the taboo subject of surrogacy to the fore.
Inspired by her own work with couples, Cynthia Harris has just published the gripping and thought-provoking Baby, Baby.
Reviewers have already provided plenty positive feedback on her highly original and edge-of-the-seat narrative.
Cynthia, whose favourite author is George Eliot, said: “I came across the complicated issues around surrogacy during my work in couples’ therapy.
“For the woman bearing the child there can be difficulties of letting the baby go at the agreed time.
“The situation can provoke feelings in the woman’s partner that neither had anticipated, and when the surrogate is related to one of the biological parents, who might have a continuing relationship with the child, the scope for more emotional entanglements is even greater.
“It looked to me like a perfect topic to explore relationships and the concept of parenthood.
Baby, Baby follows the fortunes of Penny who agrees to help her ambitious sister, Alex, to start a family for her.
Cynthia’s beautifully written book explores how the surrogacy agreement affects two marriages as well as sibling relationships.
And the outcome remains debatable until the final few riveting pages.
Cynthia added: “Penny has no idea how events might unfold or how the emotions of everyone involved will be heightened and how tangled their family relationships could become.
“This seemingly settled and contented extended family is thrown into turmoil as a result of the pregnancy.
“The stability of two marriages is seriously challenged and the future of the unborn baby is in jeopardy.
“What does becoming a mother or father mean?
“How does surrogacy fit into parenting?
“Whose responsibility is it to love and care for those we bring into this world?”
Cynthia began her working life as a French teacher before concerns for her pupils’ welfare led to a move into psychotherapy and counselling.
Although the mother-of-two has been writing from her own school days, it took until 2018 before she published her first collection of short stories.
Cynthia was encouraged by fellow members of the Melvern writing group to progress Baby, Baby into a novella.
