Varieties of Avocados
Hass
Being the most marketeable and the reliable producer in the majority of areas, we should suggest that it makes up the bulk of trees in the orchard except in the hot areas, as here the fruit grows to a small size.
Lamb Hass
Similar to the Hass variety, it is larger on average. Although the fruit matures late, the tree grows to be more upright and compact than the Hass. It not only crops heavily but is also prone to biennial bearing (where the tree has large yields one year then produces less or nothing the second year). Lamb Hass trees attract a royalty payment at the nursery upon the purchase.
Shepard
It is recommended for the warmer areas with mild winter temperatures like the Mareeba-Dimbulah Irrigation Area and warmer slopes of the Bundaberg and Childers region. It is even more sensitive to the cooler temperatures during the flowering and also has the negative affects of the fruit set.
Reed
It is a late season variety with an upright growth habit and produces a spherical fruit. It is not only suitable over a wide range of environments but is also picked late in the season to be accepted by the customers.
Wurtz
This tree tends to be smaller than the other varities but also has a dense canopy and is prone to attack by the insects like Monolepta and the red mite. It is a mid to late season variety.
