Sunderland grandfather’s second book published

Added: (Mon Jan 29 2024)

Pressbox (Press Release) - We’ve all heard of the difficult second album, well Sunderland author Thomas Frail is adamant that it also applies to the written word.
The 58-year-old’s sensational debut, Places to Visit on the Way There, was met with a lengthy string of five-star reviews on its release in 2019.
Critics described Thomas’s first anthology of short stories as ‘powerful and evocative’, ‘brilliant’, ‘dark and entertaining’ and ‘a disquieting read’.
Complex plots, keenly-observed characterisation and a wide range genres provided perfect escapism for readers.
But it has taken close to five years for Thomas to finally finish the long-awaited Places to Visit on the Way Back.
He said: “I was told by all and sundry that the second one would be much easier – what a load of codswallop that is.
“The second book was bloody hard work.
“I love words and I love writing, but the stories that came to me in the first book were nearly all natural births, so to speak.
“Most of the ones in this latest book were either breach or caesarean, but I hasten to add, equally loved.”
Places to Visit on the Way Back doesn’t disappoint with an eclectic mix of 17 original and gripping short stories.
And he has followed the same popular format of providing a prologue to introduce each of his thought-provoking stories.
With perfect pacing, devilish twists and intelligent themes, Thomas’s growing readership can enjoy more of the same.
The only real surprise remains that it took the grandfather some four decades to finally publish his work, as he was inspired to begin writing as a teenager after encouragement at school.
Thomas explained: “I have written for almost 40 years on and off but never took it too seriously.
“It was only reaching middle age, that I decided to make the leap and put together my first book.
“My greatest achievement to date is publishing my book of short stories, Places to Visit on the Way There, after thinking about it for so long.
“My inspiration, even though it was so long ago, has to be my English teacher, Mr McKeague, who taught me that imagination is the key that unlocks every great story.”
