Pressbox (Press Release) - One of the country’s leading psychotherapists has returned to the world of fiction with a gripping sequel to his debut novel.
Professor Ernesto Spinelli is best known for his progressive theories and celebrated publications on psychotherapy.
But the South-East London-based Fellow of the British Psychological Society has also made his mark in crime fiction - back in 2019 with the publication of Scorpio’s Children.
The masterful suspense thriller earned a string of five-star reviews at the time from enthusiastic critics.
Two years on, Ernesto has finally published the highly-anticipated sequel, Cruel Love Ways, to further critical acclaim.
Yet again his protagonist investigator Mark Desmond finds himself in the middle of a web of murder, secrets, and unexpected twists.
Ernesto explained: “Just over six weeks since she entered Mark Desmond's life, Renata Genzler is unexpectedly, and brutally, murdered.
“Determined to track down his newfound lover's killer, and to honour his promise to find her missing brother, Desmond is drawn into a web of lies, all of which have one question at their centre - who was Renata?
“To solve the puzzle of her life, Desmond must navigate his way through a landscape of sexual politics whose boundaries and signposts are being redrawn.”
Set in late 1980s Bible-belt of America against a backdrop of the AIDs pandemic, Cruel Love Ways, is a page-turning thriller that pits Desmond against sexual mavericks, born-again Christians, and even New Age dreamers.
Reviewers have described Ernesto’s sequel as ‘a broad-based novel with many satisfying layers’, ‘a fantastic read’ and ‘read it the day I got it’.
Reviewer Stuart Wooler added: “It goes to places that not any detective novel I know of has gone.”
Professor Spinelli has also come in for personal praise for his powerful narrative and complex characterisation.
Reviewer D Heckscher stated: “I really liked the open way Spinelli tackled sexual differences via his psychologically minded PI Mark Desmond.
“He highlighted the whole area of identity in such a realistic and thought-provoking way.”
As well as authoring numerous authoritative books on psychotherapy, Ernesto has written and presented a two-part Channel 4 documentary on William Sargant.
He has also been a guest on Radio 4 to offer his expertise and discuss his research.
Ernesto works and lives in what he describes as ‘Nappy Valley’ with his wife and their three cats.
