Scot’s climate concerns reach top of book charts

Scottish geographer Neil Kitching is hoping to take care of some unfinished business next year – by saving the planet.
The 54-year-old has made a good start with the release of his book, Carbon Choices: Common-sense Solutions to our Climate and Nature Crises, which was released in October to critical acclaim.
Not only has it gone to number one in the environmental book charts, but amongst its growing number of supporters is broadcaster and naturalist David Attenborough.
Over the decades Neil had grown increasingly frustrated by society’s ignorance and inaction over the impending climate crisis.
He explained: “Carbon Choices arose from a frustration that people are still unaware of climate change facts and its implications.
“I studied climate change, glaciology and the Antarctic in the 1980s and have lived since then knowing that humans were slowly destroying our planet.
“Climate change has crept up on us just the way the scientists predicted.
“I have lived with a frustration that people aren’t doing enough about it and so I wanted to do something about that.
“Incorporating nature loss into the book is ambitious, but necessary, as nature is integral to climate change and wildlife is fragile.
“I sent a copy of the book to Sir David Attenborough and received a handwritten letter back saying that he was "greatly looking forward to reading it"”
Neil began writing Carbon Choices: Common-sense Solutions to our Climate and Nature Crises last winter with an aim of publishing ahead of the COP-26 climate conference in Glasgow - initially to be held in November 2020, now rescheduled for November 2021. Neil said " I am in the right place, at the right time" as a Scottish energy expert and author in the lead up to the most important global climate conference - to be held on my doorstep.
For each of his 27 chapters, he sourced experts in their fields and asked them to review his work adding credence to the arguments he makes in his book.
Neil’s authoritative finished book considers the psychology that drives people to buy more ‘stuff’ and whether this makes them happier.
In plain language, he also describes ten building blocks that provide everyone with a foundation to create their own sensible climate change solutions.Carbon Choices: Common-sense Solutions to our Climate and Nature Crises also includes five common-sense principles to guide everyone in the decisions that they make.
Neil, who has climbed all of Scotland’s 282 Munros, added: “By applying the principles detailed in the book to our daily lives – our diets, homes, travel, shopping and leisure - we can regenerate nature, improve our society, be healthier, happier and lead more fulfilled lives.
“This book will fill any gaps in people’s understanding of climate change and nature loss.
“It will hopefully motivate them to change their behaviour and maybe inspire them to campaign to change business activity and government policy.”
Carbon Choices: Common-sense Solutions to our Climate and Nature Crises has been described by reviewers and scientists as ‘a call to action’, ‘a fantastic contribution’, and ‘offers common-sense ways to address the problem’.

Shortly after its release Carbon Choices: Common-sense Solutions to our Climate and Nature Crises reached number one in Amazon’s environmental chart.
After graduating in geography from Edinburgh University, Neil retrained as an accountant, working in the private sector and then the public sector as an auditor.
But a burning desire to combat climate change, led to the father-of-three making another career change to work in Sustainable Development policy.
He is now employed as an Energy Specialist for a Scottish public agency which supports businesses.
Neil is donating one third of all profits from Carbon Choices: Common-sense Solutions to our Climate and Nature Crises to rewilding projects.
