Iridium and Qualcomm are partnered to enable the non-terrestrial communication in the next generation 5G smartphones and IoT devices

Iridium Satellite (NYSE American: IRDM) today announced that the chipmaker Qualcomm exclusively adopted Iridium Short Burst Data® (SBD®) service in the next generation Qualcomm SD800 Snapdragon chipsets. With Qualcomm's technical and financial support, the potential Iridium device ecosystem expands vastly to include the most popular smartphones, laptops, tablets, and other IoT modules.
Bryan Hartin, Executive VP said, "Qualcomm's support of Iridium’s Short-Burst-Data represents a very significant milestone for Iridium to commercialize our proprietary SBD technology in next-generation smartphones in the U.S. and APAC.
Iridium SBD® will be embedded in Qualcomm SD800 Snapdragon chips as an exclusive satellite communications module. The new SBD-enabled Snapdragon chipsets will support real-time satellite communications for SMS, messenger, and social media applications as well as for a wide range of industrial IoT applications such as equipment telematics, asset tracking and monitoring applications in Oil and Gas, Utilities, and Maritime.
Companies already started beta trials, which are nearing completion, are thoroughly testing its real-time, two-way communication, over-the-air configuration ability, built-in 5G and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) connectivity and industry-grade security functions.
As of the fourth quarter of 2020, Iridium satellite communication subscribers grew 20% from the year-ago period to 984,000 customers, continuing the company's growing position as the premier satellite communications provider.
