Pressbox (Press Release) -
A retired Crown Prosecutor from the Derbyshire Peak District deserves a high five after producing his latest gripping thriller.
Death Stands on Guard is the fifth sensational page-turner from lawyer-turned-author Tony Read since he retired from the courts of Derby and Yorkshire.
The 70-year-old, who worked as a prosecutor for Derbyshire County Council before beginning a long and fulfilling career with the Crown Prosecution Service, admits he harboured an ambition for writing from an early age.
Father-of-two Tony, who has been married to Shirley for almost 40 years, said: “I made my first attempt at a novel aged approximately 13 and then completed my first full length novel, which is now thankfully lost, when I was a student at university.
“The person who most inspired me to write was my aunt Mary Hampson, who was a journalist for the Daily Dispatch and did some freelance work for the BBC.”
Tony’s latest novel yet again features the relentless Detective Inspector Mark Hobson as well as his beautiful wife, Helena.
As with his previous four novels - Murder Must be Witnessed, Death in Dark waters, Innocence is no Defence and A Proper Country Funeral – Death Stands on Guard is set within the rugged Peak District of Derbyshire.
Tony, who lives in High Peak, bases DI Hobson on a former criminal lawyer colleague.
And yet again the brilliant detective is tested to the limit as he attempts to unravel another complex criminal case.
Tony added: “In Death Stands on Guard an old lady gets ready for bed not knowing that a vicious young thug with robbery, rape and murder in mind, is fast approaching her home.
“But then the ground beneath his feet gives way and he is caught in a monstrous trap.
“So begins a complex story of love and sacrifice, greed and deception, loyalty and betrayal that Detective Inspector Mark Hobson is required to unravel.
“His investigation leads him into the murky world of unlicensed gambling and brings him into conflict with a notorious criminal family, and into contact with a Polish veteran of World War II and his beautiful but vulnerable granddaughter.”
As well as writing his critically-acclaimed DI Hobson series of novels, Tony has also penned an anthology of poems.
He is also chairman of the National Trust Peak District Centre, volunteers with Derbyshire Wildlife Trust and for 15 years was Group Scout Leader of his local Scout Group.
