Retired Oxford teacher’s debut book

Added: (Sun May 19 2019)

Pressbox (Press Release) - A retired teacher has delved deep into the Birmingham underworld of human trafficking and murder to produce her first novel – at the age of 76.
Jacqueline Bowman taught natural sciences in secondary schools for 30 years.
Only after completing a further horticultural diploma early in her retirement did the granny-of-three decide to return to her first love – books.
Jacqueline has now penned her debut novel, What Gina Did, and it’s packed with passion, ambition and the odd killing.
She said: “When my dad took me to the library and I could never borrow enough books to keep me happy.
“I was a rapid reader and wrote all manner of childish stories from as young as seven.
“After I retired from teaching I ran academic conferences, took a diploma in Horticultural Science from the RHS, painted, potted, and wrote the odd short story and a few poems, and finally got to writing What Gina Did.
“I can’t recall where the idea first came from for What Gina Did, it seemed to just be there.”
Jacqueline’s gripping black-humoured thriller tells the story of warring husband-and-wife, Zak and Gina.
While their unfulfilled marriage seems to be going nowhere, the building web of secrecy they keep from each other builds towards an explosive climax.
There are affairs, deaths, girl-smuggling, Russians, and an unstinting desire for a university education.
What Gina Did is a highly accomplished slice of dark humour told beneath a cloak of Midlands menace.
Jacqueline, who is married to an Oxford professor, admits she settled on the book’s setting to bring some balance to the world of literature.
She added: “I chose Birmingham simply because it seemed under-represented in books and I thought I’d find out a bit about the place on the way.
“I did plenty of research as What Gina Did began to take shape.
“I am now thinking about a second book, which might continue where the first leaves off, but I don’t want to give anything else away.”
