A retired Merchant Seaman from Devon has used the world’s greatest writer as inspiration for his debut novel.
P J Paterson’s five-star-rated novel, ‘And Don’t Forget the Roses,’ introduces readers to Sam Farmer and other brilliantly intriguing characters in the surrounds of love and loss.
P J explained: “The majority of research for ‘And Don’t Forget the Roses’ involved reading many of William Shakespeare works, particularly – ‘Taming of the shrew,’ which this novel is loosely based on.
“My story involves two strangers who apparently meet by accident (or was it?) One whose life is at a crossroads, the other who wrongly thinks theirs is mapped out for them.
“Undemanding friendship and trust are all they ask from each other.
“Unbeknown to them competing forces are at work to test that resolve - betrayal, greed, revenge and manipulation are all at play to test them to breaking point.
“How they respond will determine if love conquers all.”
As with Shakespeare’s finest plays, P J’s novel works on various levels as mystery and intrigue surrounds a chance meeting.
As with the sequel, The Long Reach Back, And Don’t Forget the Roses is perfectly paced and intelligently structured with masterful characterisation.
P J, who is already working on a third book in his Sam Farmer series, ‘Where sleeping dogs lie,’ admits publishing novels has been a lifetime’s ambition.
The 66-year-old father-of-two said: “Since childhood I’ve always wanted to write a novel, but it wasn’t until my late 50s that I finally put pen to paper aware life is a road only travelled once.
“During my life I have had many acquaintances, some of whom, ‘saints and sinners’ have morphed into characters in my novels.
“Although I have now written a romantic tale and a thriller, I am led by my characters, most of whom are multi-facetted in a way that when circumstances arise beyond their control, they step outside themselves to the extent that they are capable of anything.”
After serving in the Merchant Navy for many years, he ran his own successful maintenance company until retiring in 2015.
