Pressbox (Press Release) - A war-veteran from the wilds of Pembrokeshire has gone to America for his five-star debut novel.
Jan Steer, who spent 25 years in the Royal Navy, has just published his gripping adventure story, Someplace Else.
And he’s has used the inhospitable deserts of the United States to stage his highly-entertaining thriller.
Someplace Else is the story of an unlikely couple - Laurie Price and Angie Reeves - who are thrown together by misfortune, yet somehow fend off crime gangs while at the same time survive what the desert throws at them.
Jan, who has an MA in creative writing from the University of Wales, told us: “With Someplace Else I wanted to create an adventure story for grown-ups with characters complex enough to be interesting but with personalities that the reader could relate to.
“Every man will see a little of himself in Laurie Price and every woman would want to find an Angie Reeves inside of her.
“The story is set in an all but forgotten town way out in a desert in America.
“It is set in 1938 and re-visiting the period through research proved to be a fascinating journey for me.”
Father-of-three Jan, who now lives in rural Pembrokeshire, enlisted in the Royal Navy when he was just 14 years old.
After coming ashore 25 years later he forged a career in podiatry – first as a practising podiatrist and later as a lecturer.
He recently retired and concentrates more time to his writing.
Having already had several short stories and articles published in magazines, Jan believes his travels and varied career has helped his fiction.
He added: “I met some wonderful people and saw some amazing places all of which have proved useful when developing characters and scenarios for my stories.
“Being retired from employment now I have the time to write more.”
Since the release of Someplace Else by PublishNation, it was earned entirely five-star reviews from readers.
Michelle Stewart described Jan’s novel as having a ‘superb storyline’ and having ‘great characters’.
Thomas Suddes added: “You might have an idea who is who but a clever plot keeps you guessing to the end.”
Jan has already completed his second novel, which is due for publication later this year, and he’s currently working on a third book.
