Oxford author Paul Rodriquez is back, and he’s brought many of his outrageously rich and successful characters with him.
The 55-year-old, who works as a hospital administrator by day, released the five-star-rated A Broken Heart Can Mend back in 2019.
Influenced by American soap operas and Mills and Boon-style romance stories, the father-of-one has carved out a reputation as a masterful storyteller.
Although fans of his original novel have had to wait three years on the sequel, it has been worthwhile with the follow-up, The Next Stop is… Home or Jail being every bit as entertaining.
And it has already reached Amazon’s Urban Fiction top ten.
Set yet again in American state of Louisiana, the page-turning romance provides a welcome return for most of Paul outlandish characters – as well as a new face on the block.
He explained: “I wanted to write a follow up to A Broken Heart Can Mend and introduce readers to Erin who basically has more money than sense, having inherited over $25 million from her late husband Elliot.
“The new book is about Herbert and Bonnie Lomas, who run a successful food production company.
“All seems to be going well with the family – but that is about to change when Herbert’s sister Erin arrives in Baton Rouge from California with plans to set up a rival business.
“Will Erin get her own way and affect the running of Herbert and Bonnie’s business?”
As with his original novel, Paul’s follow-up is delightfully character-led with rivalry and tragedy eventually changing the protagonists.
His exploration of human emotions is both uplifting and thought-provoking.
Although Paul did plenty of pain-staking research into the Louisiana setting for his latest novel, having a few expert friends as work colleagues also helped.
He explained: “Even though I’d visited the USA a few times, I had to find out about what it would like to live in Baton Rouge, which is the capital of the state of Louisiana.
“I had two advantages in working with two nutritionists in my hospital department here in Oxford.
“And there was also a former member of our church used to live in Baton Rouge before she returned to the States in the late 1990s.
“However, I still had to investigate parts of the city mainly using the internet and speaking to the staff at the Baton Rouge mayor’s office.”
