Notts granddad maps out success for surveying book

Modern-day explorer and cartographer Alan Hay has just completed his most impressive mapping to date – his own amazing life story.
The 76-year-old from Nottinghamshire has spent a lifetime travelling to the most remote parts of the planet to carry out surveying work.
And he is responsible for some of the most unhospitable corners of earth finally being put down on paper and mapped.
The grandfather-of-two’s amazing story, A Life Mapped Out, has already topped Amazon’s Surveying charts as well as entering the top ten in its Memoirs listings.
Alan admits it was pressure from friends and family which convinced him to relive his decades of globe-trotting adventures.
He said: “I was inspired to write by friends and family remarking on what they called my incredible life, so I decided to put pen to paper.
“A Life Mapped Out is my autobiography from early childhood until into my retirement.
“It is a story of adventure and excitement all over the world and me doing the thing I love, which is mapping.
“Apart from checking a few facts it was written entirely from memory - without exaggeration or fiction.
“Once I got started it was amazing how events came back to me and I ended up reliving the whole of my life over again, which was a very nice, and I realised how remarkable it has been.”
Alan qualified as a land surveyor at the University of East London – and never looked back.
Much of his career was spent overseas, living for spells in many African and Middle Eastern countries as well as the likes of San Francisco and Johannesburg.
The Portsmouth and Inverness Caley football fan also spent time in many different towns and cities around Britain.
Even in his retirement Alan continues to make geological maps of the Peak District and continues to research Scottish history and geology.
As well as providing entertainment, he hopes A Life Mapped Out will inspire young readers to follow their own dreams.
Alan explained: “My greatest achievement has been be doing what I dreamed of as a child - exploring.
“My travels in the Third World have made me realise how lucky I am to be British, as well as being a child of the sixties - consequently I love every day I am alive
“I guess the message in A Life Mapped Out is to follow your childhood dreams and not to do what others expect of you as you may regret it for the rest of your life.”
Alan’s love for Scotland, after living for several years in Inverness, has inspired his next writing project of travel guides to the Highlands.
