Pressbox (Press Release) - A retired child protection Social Worker has returned to her Jamaican roots for inspiration in writing a chart-topping story for safeguarding children.
Norma Charles based her five-star Foley Crow – Friend or Foe? on a story her father would often recite when she was a child.
The 81-year-old grandmother from Nottinghamshire arrived in England more than half a century ago to train as an NHS nurse.
But it was after she moved into social work practice that she realised the extent of problems with child abuse.
The beautifully illustrated Foley Crow – Friend or Foe? provides gentle reminders for children of all ages to be careful of who they can trust.
Norma said: “My father was a prolific storyteller.
“Foley Crow is a spin-off of one of his stories - how two small crabs entered a singing contest and outsmarted a large crow who wanted to make a meal of them.
“The idea for the book is a take on my father’s story-telling along with my social work practice, my nursing and my life experiences.
“The foundation plot of Foley Crow – Friend or Foe? is to showcase vital lessons for safeguarding childhood with a simplistic approach without scaring them from developing friendships.”
Safeguarding children and their cultural heritage formed the basis of Norma’s Master’s Degree at Nottingham Trent University.
Prior to her retirement, she was both a highly respected consultant and tutor in safeguarding practices across cultures.
Norma, who once successfully took her employers to court for racial discrimination, went on to become the Chair of the Equality Council.
Even after her retirement, she has maintained a strong interest in children’s rights.
Despite a highly successful career, Norma believes publishing her first book is one of her greatest achievements.
She explained: “Given my great age there have been a few achievements along the way, but my greatest has got to be Foley Crow – Friend or Foe? because it’s a reminder that as adults we owe it to protect every child’s stability against abuse of any kind globally.”
Since the release of Foley Crow – Friend or Foe? On the 6/7/2020 it has reached number one in Amazon’s child protection chart.
It has also been awarded five-stars by reviewers, who have described Foley Crow – Friend or Foe? as containing ‘appropriate messages’ and being ‘a lovely, little story for youngsters’.
