Pressbox (Press Release) -
A retired justice system manager has become the toast of the transgender community by reaching number one with her ‘coming out’ memoirs.
Michaela Taylor spent 40 years, as Michael, rising through the ranks of the civil service.
And it was only a decade or so after retiral that the father-of-two was finally able to go public with her true identity.
She Said She is a moving account of leading a double life, taking the gender changing plunge, and the remarkable loyalty wife Ella has offered throughout.
Michaela, who is 73 years old, explained: “She Said She is aimed at anyone who likes a love story in difficult circumstances.
“It outlines my life-long struggle with my gender identity through two decades of living a secret double life from age 50 and finally my rushed euphoric dash for freedom and at last coming out at 70.
“I have been married to Ella for 52 years, she is the first She in my title She Said She – it refers to her calling me Michaela after 20 years of being unable to.
“I hope She Said She may help similar couples struggling with one of them changing gender and trying to remain together whilst managing this change.
“The book is essentially our love story tested by transition.
“I hope you enjoy it.”
She Said She has already reached number one in Amazon’s LGBTQ+ memoir charts, as well as attracting a string of five-star reader reviews.
Michaela’s biographical love story has been described as ‘touching and informative’, ‘refreshingly honest’, and ‘just couldn’t put it down’ by critics.
Fellow reviewer Alan stated: “A must read for anyone interested in gender identity and LBGT issues.”
Away from writing, Michaela continues to compete as a female racing cyclist.
And in She Said She, she highlights the problems many transgender people face when it comes to competitive sport.
Michaela added: “Despite being over 70 I spend my time cycle racing - something I was very good at when 17 but now useless.
“I also enjoy running, going to numerous fitness classes and, best of all, walking on the hills, moors and at the coast near, our northern homeland, with the love of my life, Ella.
“Although this book is a love story, it touches too on the current spat between Safe Spaces for Women, Fair Play for Women and Trans Women in Sport against the whole transgender community that have ignited such controversy and anger fuelled by the interventions of the likes of J K Rowling and Martina Navratilova.”
Michaela and Ella continue to live close to their family in the north of England.
