Norfolk writer’s hit Brexit book tops charts

A Norfolk pensioner’s satirical stoking of the Brexit divide flames has taken him all the way to number one in the political book charts.
Stanley Walter Broadhurst has spent the past few years penning letters to the local papers, as well as The Independent, with his humorous views on the referendum and its repercussions.
Now the staunch Remainer has, in the spirit of Chris Morris, Charlie Booker and Armando Iannucci, just published his first darkly humorous book.
My Tory Friends, And Yours has already reached number one in Amazon’s Political Humour chart and been met with critical acclaim.
Stanley said: “My Tory Friends, And Yours is about people we all know who have been split by the Referendum from Hell.
“Before this era, their political allegiance would have been secondary in their relationship with each other, yet that has all changed.
“The message from My Tory Friends, And Yours is basically that that no reconciliation can occur unless we learn to laugh at ourselves again.”
Stanley’s brilliantly observed commentary looks at the arguments from both sides of the European Union membership divide.
With razor-sharp humour and a deep understanding of British politics, he provides plenty food for thought.
Cultural, economic and political arguments are all explored in Stanley’s search for a better understanding of the Leave cause – and some much-needed middle-ground.
And he doesn’t shy away from the racist undertones that can often plague political debate.
Stanley explained: “Although My Tory Friends, And Yours is written from the perspective of a Remainer, I use argument and humour to try and replace the stinted conversations that continue between people from the same families and circles of friends.
“The idea for writing My Tory Friends, And Yours came from the massive and obvious split between people of my acquaintance.
“I’m sure that my own circle is representative of millions of others throughout the land, who still can’t agree about Brexit.”
Although My Tory Friends, And Yours was intended as a one-off, the response to his book and the continued problems surrounding Brexit have led Stanley to consider a sequel.
He added: “There may be another book as this era, and Brexit Britain, produce writing-fodder on a daily basis.”
