Norfolk writer’s amusing tales turned into new book

Added: (Wed Mar 15 2023)

Pressbox (Press Release) - Retired Norfolk civil servant Iain Gent Christie admits he has enjoyed his life.
So much so, that he spent most of the pandemic recalling the humorous happenings he’s come across over the decades.
Iain has just released Kip’s Progress: How to Fall Asleep before the Snoring Starts Up on the Other Side of the Bed.
The laugh-out-loud look at life through his leftfield lens has been described as ‘highly amusing’ by enthusiastic test readers.
And he hopes his first foray into publishing will be met with similar enthusiasm after being released on general sale.
Iain said: “The main motivation for writing Kip’s Progress was the Covid lockdown, so it was a time-filler.
“Then, once started, the memories amused me, and It occurred that they might affect others in the same way!
“As I realise that a largely non-achieving life by an ordinary man will not attract the interest of most people, unlike most memoirs or autobiographies Kip’s Progress highlights the hilarious aspects of each era I have lived through, rather than the more serious experiences.
“Therefore it is a flippant account of my time on earth.
“The more serious side of what I have lived through is not dodged, but the surreal nature of the narrative is the most important factor.”
Iain’s book charts the changes to everyday life over the past seven or so decades.
Kip’s Progress is also a timely reminder of days gone by when getting by was much less complicated.
But it also delves deeply into hose decades when language was more lucid and readers were not so easily offended.
Iain, who is influenced by writers such as Billy Connolly and Bill Bryson, does offer a warning for anyone about to pick up their copy of Kip’s Progress.
He explained: “As Kip’s Progress covers an entire life story, albeit largely the humorous side of it, I feel that it contains stories, places, and events that will have a strong pull of nostalgia in readers who experienced similar eras themselves.
“The only slight concern I have is that the various eras utilise humour that is relevant to the time.
“The type of humour employed stretches through childish, schoolboy, adolescent, work-related, adult, retirement, and geriatric and some of the language and punchlines may not entertain everyone.
“No matter, in my opinion, because it is a book for adult readers.”
Following the positive feedback from Kip’s Progress, and the continued recollection of forgotten events, Iain is currently considering a sequel.
