Pressbox (Press Release) -
The adaptable pen of award-winning screenwriter Martyn Hesford has taken him to the top of the poetry charts.
The writer behind such film and televisions gems as Mrs Lowry and Son, and Fantabulosa! has released his first anthology.
Lilac White has not only reached number one in the British Poetry chart, it has also attracted a string of five-star reviews from captivated readers.
Celebrated actor Sir Derek Jacobi describes Martyn’s debut collection as ‘beautifully imagined’ and ‘challenging but hugely rewarding’.
Fellow reviewers have praised Lilac White as being ‘a remarkable debut’, and added ‘cherish the words’ and ‘my poetry soul has been touched and awakened’.
Critic David Barlow stated: “This collection, by one of our most gifted of writers, is a real treasure.”
Lilac White is a stunningly minimalistic, yet deeply moving, anthology of poems influenced by Martyn’s personal journey through life.
Exploring the magical, the mystical, and the sacred, his talent for evocative tones and startling imagery shines throughout this wonderful collection.
Although influenced by poets such as Samuel Beckett and Jean Cocteau, Martyn’s collection is both unique and highly original.
He explained: “I’m all for knowing the rules – but smashing them up.
“Finding my own way. Asking myself why? How?
“I went to grammar school and became a punk. So that sums it up, really.
“Rules, once you know them, are made to be broken. A work is its own piece. Its own heart.
“Poetry is invisible – what’s not said is as important as the said. Poetry happens in between the words.
“Poetry might take a lifetime to understand, or you might never truly understand it.
“You can savour a word, a line.”
Poetry has been a natural progression for the one-time actor and student at The Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London.
After a decade of starring on the country’s best-loved stages, as well as enjoying several leading film and television roles, Martyn concentrated entirely on writing after winning the Radio Times Drama Award for his first screenplay, A Small Mourning.
His credits since are extensive, having penned many celebrated radio and television dramas as well as theatre productions.
Martyn’s latest screenplay - a film biopic of Danny La Rue – is currently in pre-production, and his first novel, The Moon is Blue, is due to be published later this year.
He is also composing more poems for a second anthology.
