Manchester writer goes back to roots for first book

Added: (Wed Jun 09 2021)

Pressbox (Press Release) - A former travel agent from Manchester has gone back to her family’s Pakistani roots for her remarkable first novel.
And Zeenat Sultan has been rewarded with A Family Complete flying straight into the top three on its recent release.
The 40-year-old new writer admits it was a brush with another famous author that convinced her to pick up the pen.
Zeenat explained: “I was working in the travel agent’s when an author came in to buy tickets for a tour.
“She had an author’s copy of her book with her, and I was like, ‘wow I wish I could write a book’.
“Six years later I have.”
A Family Complete introduces readers to shy Karachi maid, Aruba, and her dreams of one day becoming a fashion designer.
Zeenat’s debut, which is the first in a planned series featuring the same characters, highlights the strong maternal connections between Aruba and her mother, as well as the jealousy that she generates with her blossoming beauty.
Although the characters and plot are fictitious, the story’s wedding and other major events are based on the author’s real-life experiences of her visits to Pakistan.
The gripping character study explores the customs and class systems of the Indian sub-continent which can prevent young women often reaching their potential.
But the uplifting narrative also shows how determination can overcome whatever obstacles are put in your way.
Zeenat, who lists Khalid Hosseini and Virginia Andrews among her favourite authors, added: “Aruba was only two years old when her mum got a job as a maid for a wealthy family.
“She shares a very special bond with her mum, who herself has faced many obstacles by raising Aruba alone without a father.
“Haroon, who now lives in Dubai, is the eldest son of the household where her mother works, and he falls in love with Aruba.
“His family is not happy about the relationship because of her status, but this does not stop him from marrying her.”
Since the recent release of A Family Complete it has reached number three in Amazon’s historical fiction charts.
Zeenat has also been encouraged by great feedback from her family and work colleagues who read the pre-publication drafts.
Zeenat is currently working on the sequel to A Family Complete.
