Less is more for focused artist and self-help author Sophie Rose Peters – particularly when it comes to improving mental-health.
The London-based writer has penned several well received studies into living with conditions such as bi-polar disorder, shyness, and anxiety.
But her latest guide to improving well-being looks to what is around us.
Minimalism and Mental Illness: A Focus of the Mind is a deeply personal and highly convincing guide to decluttering.
Sophie Rose explained: “Minimalism and Mental Illness: A Focus of the Mind is especially aimed at readers with mental illness and gently proposes a minimalist life and home.
“It guides the reader through the benefits of this habit and encourages them to try it out for themselves and learn by doing.
“It is a simple read, after all minimalism is itself simple and not complicated.
“Once we discover how it focuses our minds, we may never look back.
“It is not a magical solution to complex circumstances, but it is definitely one thing that has many worthwhile benefits for us.”
Although the connection between minimalism and well-being has been established by previous authors and psychologists, Sophie Rose approaches decluttering from the perspective of someone suffering from a mental health condition.
The 46-year-old has written openly in the past about her own bi-polar condition.
And she provides strong testimony in Minimalism and Mental Illness: A Focus for the Mind to how creating exterior space leads to internal improvements.
Sophie Rose added: “When we have a mental illness or a diagnosis we can benefit from all kinds of tools and practices to make our lives easier and our minds calmer.
“Minimalism can be one such practice.
“It can help to reduce clutter in our environment and give us a sense of peace.
“Having a tidy surrounding is good for us and it is good our mental health.
“But it is not that easy to do, and we need to be introduced to it – and here is where this book comes into its own.”
Sophie Rose’s authoritative healing guides not only provide tips and support but also encourage readers to explore their own faith, spirituality and identity.
As well as writing several beneficial books at her London studio, Sophie Rose also produces stunning paintings and book illustrations.
