Llandudno goats inspire new children’s book

Added: (Thu Aug 11 2022)

Pressbox (Press Release) - Ruby Maxwell has made a career of encouraging children to enjoy the delights of story books.
And now the former English teacher, with a little help from a couple of dozen goats, is spreading the joy of the written word beyond the classrooms of Wales and Scotland.
Inspired by the goats of Llandudno who made the headlines after wandering into town during the recent lockdowns, Ruby has produced her debut children’s novel, The Battle for Goatly Hall.
The hugely enjoyable page-turner not only pays homage to the creatures, but also promotes the need for living in harmony with wildlife.
Ruby explained: “The goats of Llandudno gained worldwide fame during Covid lockdown, when large groups of them wandered into the town, sauntering down the main streets, sunbathing on the beach and merrily browsing as they went along.
When lockdown ended many of them chose to remain in the town centre.
Their story is the inspiration for this book.”
The popularity of the Llandudno goats, combined with the gentle message that we should always try to coexist harmoniously with all creatures with whom we share this planet, makes this the perfect book for readers young and old.
While the antics of the real Llandudno goats were featured on news outlets around the world, their back story is just as incredible.
Ruby added: “These Goats are the only genuine cashmere breed in the country, and are direct descendants of a herd given to Queen Victoria by the Shah of Persia.”
A pair of the magnificently horned beasts with their white, silky coats, was brought from Windsor Great Park to his home in Llandudno by General Sir Savage Mostyn, then Colonel of The Royal Welch Fusiliers, between 1887 and I897.
When a breeding population had been achieved they were released on to the Great Orme, the mountainous limestone nature reserve which overlooks the town.
The Royal Welch Fusiliers still have a Great Orme Goat as their mascot.
The Battle of Goatly Hall follows a herd of 24 goats as they search for ways of raising enough money to buy their permanent and safe home in Llandudno.
With delicious characterisation and plenty of unexpected twists, this colourful and lively narrative is sure to have young readers hooked from the opening chapter.
