Pressbox (Press Release) -
A former nurse from Leicestershire has returned to the Welsh woodlands of her childhood in search of her fairy friends.
As a child Barbara Flavell was convinced the mythical winged creatures inhabited the forest behind her family’s Pembrokeshire farm.
More than six decades on the grandmother has just published her first children’s adventure story, Melissa the Fairy Princess, set in the same Willoughby Woods.
Barbara’s beautifully written adventure story has already been met with a string of five-star reviews from captivated readers.
The 67-year-old, who writes under the name Maisy Day, said: “I grew up in rural Pembrokeshire and as the daughter of hard-working farmers my younger years were spent as much working as playing.
“But we lived surrounded by the most magical woods and beautiful countryside - places that became a natural playground for my sisters and I to explore and indulge our imagination in as we explored the endless paths filled with nature and wildlife.
“I always maintained I could see fairies, whether this was in my imagination or was it real, I’m not sure.
“The woods around Trearched Farm will always hold a special place in my heart and have inspired me to turn my imagination to writing.”
Melissa the Fairy Princess is a timeless adventure which follows the fortunes of Olivia after her little brother, Edward, stumbles across the secrets she keeps within Willowbe Woods.
The siblings, with help from the forest’s talking animals, elves and pixies, face a race against time to find missing Melissa.
Barbara’s thrilling story demonstartes how teamwork, persistence and friendship add up to happy endings.
Melissa the Fairy Princess has been described by reviewers as ‘uplifting’, ‘amazing’, and ‘captivating’.
Reviewer Chrisy Wakefield stated: “It’s a book you just can’t put down.”
Melissa the Fairy Princess is the first in a planned The Adventures of Willowbe Woods series.
Barbara, who left Wales in her late teens to begin a nursing career in London, is also working on a novel for adults under her own name.
The avid tennis player’s retirement career is all the more remarkable as she was diagnosed with dyslexia at a young age.
She explained: “I was three years old when I started to read - I was not going to be left at home whilst my sister went to school so I was allowed to go with her.
“I will never forget my first teacher, she was a lovely lady, and she picked up very quickly that I was dyslexic, being left-handed, believe it or not I used to write from right to left, and write all my letters and numbers back to front.
“This is something I still do today when I am tired.”
