Pressbox (Press Release) - A long-term illness has proved to be a blessing in disguise for a former Leicestershire data technician after he finally started on his backburner novel.
MJ Herbert’s stunning sci-fi thriller, Inside Man: The Ethan Series Book One, has just been released to five-star reviews from captivated readers.
The 73-year-old from Loughborough had spent many years devising a plot for his first book.
But it was not until a forced lay-off from his job with a multi-national engineering company, caused by cellulitis, that he was finally able to start writing.
MJ, who only retired last year, said: “The idea behind the book, which, as is possibly the case for many authors, became something quite different as the years passed.
“It has been a long, drawn-out effort, mainly because I never believed I could write something other people would want to read, let alone pay to do so.
“I suffered from cellulitus, which meant I could not walk far after a month in a Hospital bed, so decided to put my enforced absence from work to some good use, and started on Inside Man.”
Inside Man: The Ethan Series Book One is a highly imaginative and thoroughly convincing thriller which charts the arrival on earth of a Wormhole transporting an extra-terrestrial being.
Before crash landing in the Great Rift Valley of Kenya, the Wormhole effects the destruction of three US Fighter planes as it enters earth’s skies.
Inside Man: The Ethan Series Book One is an original and totally unpredictable story which brings together Masai warriors, US army personnel, journalists and Kenyan authorities as they attempt to solve the enigma behind the mysterious landing.
MJ’s debut novel has been described by reviewers as ‘excellent science fiction’, ‘a very new style’, and ‘a great adventure’.
Although it has taken the grandfather a long time to finally put pen to paper, MJ admits it was his imaginative father who pointed him towards the written word.
He explained: “My inspiration for reading came initially from my father - a real old-fashioned lover of words, who was a part-time printer with his own printing works in our back garden.
“He also had an amusing habit of inventing words, and nicknames for people, something I have followed him in doing.
“I was never inspired to write a novel as such, it was always a hobby, even up to the time during my period off work when I started to take completing what was initially a short story seriously. Now it has turned into a projected trilogy!”
MJ is currently working on the second part of The Ethan Series, called Inside Man – Homeworld, with plans for the final part to be completed next year.
