Lancashire gran’s book on Spanish family drama

A former education psychologist from Lancashire is offering two novels for the price of one with her gripping study of the Spanish Civil War.
Bobbie O’Bryanne, who also taught sociology and psychology during a distinguished career, has long been fascinated by recent history of her second home.
When not holidaying and writing in the sun, the grandmother can be found researching the events that led to Spain becoming divided.
Bobbie has now released the first two volumes of her saga surrounding the Lorca-Jimenez family – Capuchinos House of Secrets and Secrets Revealed – in one book.
She said: “The idea for the books came from my love of Spain and my interest in Spanish history - its societal change as well as social relationships.
“Both Capuchinos House of Secrets and Secrets Revealed are based in Spain as I write a lot when I’m there and I like researching Spanish history.”
Bobbie’s first two volumes of her planned series introduce readers to the Lorca-Jimenez family at their home near Carmona.
The novels bring to life a family’s struggles as tensions grow between the classes, eventually leading to all-out civil war.
Capuchinos House of Secrets beautifully illustrates a country where the working classes and aristocrats become embroiled in either side of the divide.
And the first two volumes also highlight how other countries prop up and support either the Republican or Nationalist causes.
Bobbie explained: “The Lorca-Jimenez family are a privileged family with vast areas of land, wealth and status.
“Their story begins in the early years when Marquis Robert and Marquesa Isabella are bringing up their children.
“Circumstances change when their position is challenged by political instability in Spain and Isabella’s despair at Roberto’s insistence on regular child bearing.
“The domestic situation further deteriorates amid tensions between Roberto and the peasants.
“A s the violence and political discord in society increases, General Franco challenges the ruling Republican Party and stages a coup d’etat.”
Prior to writing the first two parts of the Lorca-Jimenez saga, Bobbie published her stunning debut novel, Liaisons, Lovers and Lies, in 2021.
She has also been awarded literary prizes for her poetry.
