Kent writer’s trauma survival becomes hit book

A Kent photographer’s account of her harrowing childhood has become the unexpected must-read memoirs of this winter – despite her not being to read or write until adulthood.
Sophia Moseley’s dark story has already beaten many A-list celebrities to reach number two in Amazon’s biography charts.
And Escaping Bohemia has also been awarded entirely five-star ratings by a growing number of captivated reviewers.

Escaping Bohemia is a brutally honest account of growing up in a chaotic world of addiction, danger and uncertainty.
Sophia said: “Escaping Bohemia is about my journey through part of my childhood living with a mother full of pain and addictions.
“During these crazy times, which saw my mum have several spells in prison, I was surrounded by a bunch of colourful characters.
“I emerged as one of two broken children – and there was also the brother we never knew.
“The message I want to provide with Escaping Bohemia is that you can break the cycle of addiction and pain but you must face the past and be honest, even if it’s just to yourself.”
The 49-year-old, who is now a mother of two herself, has already contributed to the highly-acclaimed publication The Girls Who Refused To Quit.
But it is within the covers of Escaping Bohemia that she delves into to the darkest corners of her childhood to relive the trauma, fear and shame she suffered for many years, as well as the courage she showed to hatch her own escape.
Her haunting narrative is a deeply troubling account of a child failed by family, systems and society.
Sophia’s beautifully written story is even more remarkable due to her inability to properly read or write until she was well into her 20s.
She explained: “It was only last year that I started writing properly.
“I was an extremely late reader - I couldn't read or spell very well until early adulthood.
“I wrote a lot as a child, but it would have been totally unreadable for anyone but myself.”
Sophia, who started her own portrait photography business last year, writes almost every day in her small summerhouse.
She is currently plotting her first novel.
