London’s disturbing underbelly is exposed yet again with the release of retired doorman L P Gibbs’ latest thriller.
The 73-year-old, who now lives in Kent, spent much of his working life in and around Soho’s notorious clubs.
And he’s used his eye-opening experiences to help build up an impressive canon of page-turning thrillers since his first release just over five years ago.
L P’s latest offering, Paying Back, is a sequel to the explosive 2018 hit The Last Payback – and provides a welcome return for troubled protagonist Alan Randall.
L P said: “The character of Alan Randall is mentioned in every one of my novels and is based, very loosely, on myself.
“The retired Soho enforcer had carried out executions, for a former Detective Inspector, on evil people who had evaded justice.
“But then, as is often the way, he himself was betrayed and shot.
“Amazingly, he survives the assassination attempt and sets out to seek revenge.”
Since his first novel, Whitechapel Nights, was published in 2017, he’s gone on to release the equally well-received A Tale of Soho Nights, The Men in Grey Suits, and The Hostess, as well as The Last Payback.
As with all of L P’s previous five-star-rated thrillers, Paying Back is a fast-paced roller-coaster ride through the dangerous streets and clubs he knew well.
But in Paying Back a new threat arrives to London’s established rivalries and order in the shape of foreign gangsters.
With his family and way-of-life now under further threat Randall resorts to what he knows best in Paying Back – violence.
L G’s books have been described by critics as ‘chilling’, ‘gripping’ and ‘true-to-life’.
And it this unrivalled authenticity that takes readers into the heart of a dark world where few would dare to venture.
L G added: “When I lived in North London, I used to work as a doorman in some dubious Soho nightclubs.
“Some of the characters in my books existed under different names and some of the events really did occur.
“I like to write about things that I have knowledge of.”
Following decades on the doors of Soho’s clubs, L G relocated to Dover where he worked as a taxi driver.
Recently widowed, he now lives in New Romney where he splits his time between writing and gardening.
