Pressbox (Press Release) -
A prize-fighting politician who served time for debts has provided the inspiration for Britain’s most prolific author.
Retired policeman and lecturer Andrew Wareham has just released his 52nd novel – with two more in the pipeline.
And yet again the 72-year-old from Hampshire has landed a winner with his story of a Victorian bare-knuckle boxer who rises through the class system.
The Pinchbeck Peer, which has reached the top five in Amazon’s charts as well as receiving five-star reader reviews, is influenced by the real-life exploits of John Gully.
Andrew, who is from Northamptonshire, said: “The idea for The Pinchbeck Peer came from John Gully, the prizefighter who became an MP and a rich merchant, rising from debtor's prison by way of a fight with the infamous fighter, Game Chicken, which made him his name in the ring.
“My story is about Fabius, a brattish and raw undergraduate forced into the world after the family loses its money.
“He makes a fool of himself in the Militia when drunk, flees and falls into the prizefighting world.
“There he is spotted by a sporting nobleman who wants to inject red blood into the thinning blue blood of his family – and is bought to be a sturdy husband to a crippled wife.
“In The Pinchbeck Peer Fabius discovers compassion and love, and enter the world of politics.”
Widower Andrew, who is originally from Hampshire, enjoyed a successful and varied career which took him from teaching Economics during the 1970s and 80s to fighting crime in Papua New Guinea for a decade in the police force.
The father-of-two also worked as a trainer in Saudi Arabia and Libya before settling back in the UK to work as a security guard.
It was during his long night shifts when Andrew stepped up his writing.
He explained: “On my wife's death I remained in UK providing a base for my son and daughter and writing more.
“I worked as a night security guard and sat a desk in front of CCTV screens and wrote all night long.
“Since starting to publish my work I now write full time – ten or more hours a day in my home office and occasionally in the middle of the night if I wake up with an idea.”
The Pinchbeck Peer has been described as “entertaining and captivating” by readers.
Adam Jackson added: “It is an entertaining read and provides a compelling look at a variety of levels of society.”
The Pinchbeck Peer is the first part of a planned four-book series.
Andrew is currently two chapters into the sequel.
