Pressbox (Press Release) -
Retired Derbyshire and South Yorkshire prosecutor Tony Read has reached the stars yet again in his new career as a thriller writer.
The 74-year-old father-of-two, who is inspired by Robert Louis Stevenson and Arthur Conan Doyle, turned to writing after stepping down as a Principle Crown Prosecutor.
And, like his previous seven novels, The Perfect Candidate has been met with a string of five-str reviews from captivated critics.
Reviewers have already described the Mark Hobson series of novels as ‘complex and gripping’, ‘realistic’ and ‘chilling’.
Although Tony’s is becoming a must-read thriller writer, he admits his realistic plots aren’t carefully structured like his legal cases.
He explained: “An idea comes into my head for a book and I write a chapter not knowing what will come next.
“A story then begins to tell itself to me and I follow where it takes me.
“This may not be the best approach for everyone, but it does work for me.”
After the success of books such as Innocence is No Defence and Death Takes Revenge, Tony has provided another outing for brilliant detective Mark Hobson.
Based on one of his former colleagues, the crime-cracking DCI must face one of his most challenging cases yet in The Perfect Candidate.
In a race against time to save a missing boy, Tony’s protagonist uncovers a depraved sex ring, a sadistic killer, and historic blackmail.
With decades of courtroom experience and four decades of living in the Peak District, Tony enjoys writing about what he knows.
He said: “Little bits of The Perfect Candidate are based on real events.
“The killer with a blood phobia is based on a real criminal
“ The main character, Mark Hobson, is also based on a colleague at work who was the brightest man I ever met, and also a good friend.
“This book is partly set in the High Peak area of Derbyshire which is where I have lived for 40 years and is a place I love.”
Away from writing, Tony regularly takes part in spoken-word events around Derbyshire.
He is also a past Chairman of The National Trust Peak District Centre.
