A new Essex author has turned the boardgame she created for her young children into her debut five-star-rated fantasy novel.
Layne Warby took full advantage of being made redundant during the pandemic to dust down the adventure game and begin building a plot from the characters and scenarios.
The 50-year-old from Epping Forest has now released the page-turning Realms Elven Gold to critical acclaim.
The former special needs education worker’s gripping story has been described by reviewers as ‘fantastic reading’ and had them ‘hooked from the first chapter’.
Layne said: “I created a board game for my children when they were little, which we called Elven Gold.
“The idea being that you had to get around the board, facing setbacks of dragons, elves and sleeping potions, among a few, and the winner would be the first to reach the elves gold.
“I was made redundant during the pandemic, which has given me the opportunity to concentrate on my writing.
“The story developed and grew from this simple game until it became the book it is today.”
Realms Elven Gold follows the fortunes of Jacob, as his search for a way home from a strange realm filled with betrayal and fear, leads him on the road to enlightenment.
Plunged into the middle of an ongoing conflict, the protagonist has his own internal hurdles to overcome as well as the perils that appear to be around every corner.
Although Realms Elven Gold is a powerful, edge-of-the-seat adventure fantasy it also poses many deeper questions about humanity and society.
Layne, who lists the likes of JRR Tolkien, Herman Hesse, Alfred Noyes and Kenneth Graham among her favourite authors, added: “Jacob finds himself unsure of who to trust, as he embarks on a perilous journey to get home.
“As he struggles with his own sanity in the face of pure evil, his whole perception of the world we live in is brought into question as he begins to understand the dimensional depths of our existence.
“Trapped on the threshold of reality, Jacob is forced to ask, how much is one soul worth?
“The story is fictional, although some of the content is based on my own personal and emotional experiences.”
Following the encouraging feedback and reviews for Realms Elven Gold, Layne has now started work on a sequel.
