Durham student’s heartbreak turns to book success joy

Added: (Fri Jun 18 2021)

Pressbox (Press Release) - If the pandemic wasn’t difficult enough for Durham media student Dominic Aberdeen, breaking up on the eve of lockdown almost sent him over the edge.
But the teenager found solace in composing poems.
And earlier this month his stunning debut collection, A Rather Unhealthy Obsession, reached number one in the British Poetry chart.
The 18-year-old admits the power of the writing helped him survive a difficult year.
Aberdeen explained: “A Rather Unhealthy Obsession is about the journey I personally had to overcome during 2020.
“I was fresh out of a relationship and having to learn what really happened to me over the years and how twisted my early life truly was.
“All the while I was having to fight a daily battle with mental demons which would not let me live my life with a smile.
“The poems can be seen as a reflection of what I have been through and how much of a better place I am in currently.”
A Rather Unhealthy Obsession is a deeply personal, yet relatable, study of the traumatic aftermath of an abusive relationship.
Aberdeen’s powerful stanzas are packed with strong imagery and resonating connotations.
But ultimately A Rather Unhealthy Obsession shines a beacon of hope for anyone else who is going through the torment of separation.
Dominic, whose favourite writers include his relative Adele Cordner, Michael Morpurgo and Marcus Sedgwick, added: “I decided to collect my poems together for a book when I realised the potential that they had, especially given the positive reception they received.
“Every poem in the book is based on real events - they are true stories.”
Aberdeen is following in the family tradition of success in the arts as his late great grandfather was Auf Wiedersehen Pet actor, Des Young, and his cousin is social media sensation Evie Meg, also known as The Trippy Hippie.
As well as reaching number one in Amazon’s poetry charts, Aberdeen’s debut anthology has also attracted five-star ratings.
Reviewers of A Rather Unhealthy Obsession have said it is ‘well worth a read’, ‘I liked the honesty’, and ‘a brutal account’.
Dominic is about to complete his final year as a student studying Media (Film & TV).
He has no plans at the moment to write a second anthology of poetry.
