Pressbox (Press Release) -
Cheshire grandmother Una Hosey only discovered her ability for the written word five years ago when completing her dissertation as a mature student.
Now the 78-year-old former NHS manager has reached number one in the poetry charts with her anthology, The Embroidered Flowers.
Una’s authoritative and highly original collection of poems and short stories has also been met with critical acclaim.
The grandmother-of-two hopes her work will bring much-needed smiles to her growing readership.
Una said: “The Embroidered Flowers is a collection of short stories and poems that I hope will provide something for everyone, no matter their taste.
“There are stories of humour, stories to make you think, and even some that would suit the lovers of darker fiction.
“It was only when I did my MA dissertation that I realised I could write.
“The Embroidered Flowers is the culmination of recent years of writing short stories and poems when I had moments of inspiration through an idea or an issue.
“Some of them are semi-biographical, some have an element of truth, and some are pure fiction.
“In choosing what should go in the book, I tried to cover a broad spectrum that would hopefully delight my audience.”
Delighted they have been, as The Embroidered Flower shot straight to the top of Amazon’s highly competitive British Poetry chart within a fortnight of being published.
Una’s collection is minimal in length with few short stories stretching to more than a page or two and her poems rarely venturing beyond a single stanza.
But the impact of her thought-provoking work stays with readers long after they have packed away their glasses.
The Embroidered Flowers is Una’s fourth venture into print, having previously published her father’s poems, The Great-Granddad who Flew, written between 1929 and 2013.
Una also wrote the biographical accompaniment to the collection, entitled Miss Rose’s Leg and Other Stories.
And she has also authored a well-received academic study, Honour Based Violence - Perceptions and Complexities of Policy Legislation and Management in the United Kingdom in the 21st Century.
The former women’s rights activist already has a further two books in the pipeline.
Una explained: “The books I have at the writing stage are the story of how I became a private pilot in the early 1970s, which was rare for a woman at that time, and the second is about my trip with my husband in 1968 behind the Iron Curtain travelling by car through Europe and into Moscow and eventually returning safely.
Since retiring from NHS management 13 years ago, Una has graduated with 2 Masters degrees and a BA.
