Pressbox (Press Release) -
A new Channel Islands writer has just published the book she began 40 years earlier as a primary school pupil.
Florence May’s debut children’s book, Eugene the Brave, is a beautifully told story of a courageous small mouse.
The 48-year-old from Jersey has revealed why her first children’s storybook is proving so popular with young readers – much of it was written by the hand of a child.
Florence said: “The first draft of Eugene the Brave was written while I was at primary school.
“I used all the notes that I had kept in my notebook from my school days to help develop and finish off the plot.
“The idea is for Eugene the Brave to help inspire courage, perseverance and hope against the odds within children.
“It also reminds readers to remain optimistic, friendly and honourable whilst doing so.”
Eugene the Brave follows the fortunes of Eugene on his exciting mission of discovery.
But challenges and obstacles seem to await around every corner – calling for the small mouse to dig deep into his reserves of perseverance and resourcefulness.
As well as writing Eugene the Brave, Florence also provided the remarkable illustrations that are carefully positioned to break up the text.
Heavily influenced by Beatrix Potter and Victorian pencil artists, Florence May’s first book has already been met with five-star reviews from captivated readers.
Eugene the Brave has been described by critics as ‘enjoyable’, ‘ideal for an anxious child’, and makes young readers ‘feel brave like a superhero’.
Florence, who named her protagonist mouse after her late grandfather, added: “Eugene is small, humble, courageous and kind – he just doesn’t know it.
“Eugene the Brave champions resourcefulness, respect, honesty, and perseverance in the face of adversity.
“It is a children’s story full of positivity, hope and inspiration.
“So far everyone I know who has read Eugene the Brave has been very kind – they have loved the illustrations and said that the story was charming.”
Following the extremely positive response to the publication of Eugene the Brave, Florence hopes to continue writing and illustrating for children.
