A Cambridgeshire dietician believes her favourite hobby has provided the perfect ammunition for her hilarious debut novel.
Andrea White has just published her laugh-out-loud first book, Larger than Life, to critical acclaim and five-star reviews.
The 50-year-old, who lives just outside Peterborough, insists her passion for people-watching is helping on her quest to one day become a full-time writer.
The mum-of-two explained: “When I was a child my amazing grandma, Lily, always encouraged me to do what I loved, and we would often talk about how I wanted to be an author when I grew up.
“I love people, and people-watching and I absolutely adore being around people who shun the norm and are a little off centre.
“I spend my days pretending to work while unashamedly indulging in my true passion of people watching.
“It is a pursuit that requires dedication and commitment and I apply myself with gusto, inspired by just how unconsciously bonkers most people gloriously are.”
Larger Than Life is a hugely uplifting and entertaining romp that follows seven misfits who meet at a slimming club.
But, committed to complete an endurance challenge, the group has to overcome a strict training regime and regular humiliation from rivals, as well as avoiding the chippy – often to hilarious consequences.
Andrea’s fast-paced, first-person narrative is told through the voice of main character, Jen Harrington.
Andrea added: “Jen is a chaos magnet, nicknamed ‘Calamity Jen’ by her adoring husband.
“She attends the first meeting of the Time 2 Trim slimming club looking for something to keep her on track after her incident, and soon finds solidarity and camaraderie in a quirky bunch of oddballs.
“They form a fast and tight bond that catapults them along a journey of chaos, laughter, self-discovery, encouragement and new-found motivation.
“After being nudged into entering The Beckleton Beast our underdogs are determined not to be humiliated by Brandi and her evil Barbies and set about trying to train.
“If they can just manage to avoid suspicious policemen and murderous swans then maybe they stand a chance.”
Since the publication of Larger than Life it has received entirely five-star reviews from enthralled readers.
Andrea’s debut novel has been described as ‘feelgood from the first page’, ‘brilliantly honest, funny and moving’ and ‘a little gem’.
Andrea is currently working on the sequel to Larger than Life.
